There is some unexplained magic going on here only those with intimate
knowledge know about. After all, why use \ when you can delete the newline?
Why use \\ when you can use newlines? Evidently some rationale should be
shown.

As an uninitiated I would expect a newline to appear likewise in the
displayed text: as a line-break, not as a new paragraph, but possibly
initiating a new list-item or indentation when markup is present. Two
newlines (=1 blank line) would end the paragraph or list. Three or more
insert extra white-space.

I feel left with a set of rules that  result in quite a lot of trial and
error.
