Use pmwiki-mode for Emacs, or 'pmwe'.

They will allow you to do the editing off-line if you want to.
In addition, the speed shouldn't be problem even with a modem, since only
the raw wiki source is actually transmitted in this case.

is about 14kb... that should take 2-3 seconds if you have 56 kbit/s.
Actually, in my experience it's the pmwiki.org server is the slow link 
here, I can often see the page for a while before the CSS has been 
downloaded. (This is when connecting from home using 10 MBit/s ;-)
