Well, at present the real way to deactivate the sidebar is to do...

   $PageLayoutFmt['wikileft'] = '';

...but I do see your point.  One could also change the contents of 
Main.SideBar to be empty, as opposed to deleting the page, and this
has much the same effect (and still overrides wikilib.d/'s copy).

I don't have a really good answer for this.  Either way some folks
are going to have to do some searching--if it's there by default then
some will have to search the docs to figure out how to turn it off,
if it's not there by default then others will have to search the docs
to figure out how to turn it on.  

I often think it would be really useful to have a SetupTutorial WikiTrail,
that walks an admin through examples of the types of modifications that
can be performed (and how to perform them).  But it takes time to write
all of that...
