^Metacharacter magic$

• All non-alphanumeric characters are metasyntactic

• To match a literal non-alphanumeric, use quotes or backslash

• A dot . now matches ''any'' character, including newline

• ^ and $ always match the beginning and end of a string

• ^^ and $$ match at the beginnings and ends of lines

• # always introduces a comment
